Arcade Fire: A Discography--English Literature Course

We’ll be using the “text” of Arcade Fire as a prime example. We will explore rock music as an imperative form of protest, as a necessary public/democratic art form, and as an accessible font of social criticism. We will expand your understanding of what constitutes a text; will teach you techniques for interpreting, critiquing, and evaluating texts; and will help you write academic arguments about texts for academic, disciplinary audiences.

Discipline Specific Scholarly Inquiry

Learn how knowledge is created and transmitted in your field or discipline; understand key methods and conventions of scholarly research in your field or discipline; articulate and refine your own question for scholarly inquiry; situate your investigation in an ongoing context or conversation in your field; and design a final project that adds new perspectives to the conversation. Advanced composition will help you engage in scholarly inquiry as you work on narrowing a research question and engaging with your discipline or field of study.
